European Union seeks end to commercial seal hunt
A declaration brought to the European Union this week urges the union to ban the importation of seal products into Europe. 394 of the 732 members of the European Parliament have signed the declaration so far, and the rest have one more week to act.
Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands are already planning national bans on seal products. Norway is currently the largest market for Canadian seal pelts, but is not a member of the EU and would not be obligated to respect the ban.
